The Story of Schönegg

We have a rich and storied past. Discover the origins of our charming alpine retreat and its journey to becoming one of the most beloved hotels in the Swiss Alps. From our early days to the present, we’ve grown while staying true to our roots.

1947

The Purchase of Schönegg

Johann Julen purchases Schönegg, which at the time operated as a tea room. It was located far from the village and could only be accessed via Reidstrasse.

1947-1990

From Tea Room to Hotel

Johann Julen gradually expanded the tea room into a full-fledged hotel, continuously adding amenities and rooms to provide guests with more comfort.

1989

Connection to the Village

A tunnel was built, connecting Schönegg directly to the village. This allowed guests to reach the hotel with a convenient 5-minute walk from the train station, rather than taking a horse-drawn carriage along Riedweg.

1990

A New Era Begins

In 1990, Schönegg was built into the hotel it remains today. This expansion marked a key moment in its history, blending traditional Swiss charm with the comfort and elegance that continue to define its character, offering guests a truly authentic alpine experience.

2010

Expanding the Chalet

The Petit Chalet, a second building with 9 rooms, was added. This expansion increased the hotel’s capacity and offered guests additional luxurious accommodations.

2012

Leadership Transition

Maria Josepha Julen managed the hotel until 2012, when her children, Sebastian and Anna, took over to continue the family tradition.

2023

The Current Hosts

Sebastian and Line now lead the hotel, bringing fresh ideas while maintaining the legacy of warm hospitality and high-quality service.
